We’re pretty darn lucky in the east! We have so many beautiful beaches, including ones with playgrounds, great eateries and calm water- perfect for a family day with young children. Check out five of our favourites that tick a lot of mum’s boxes.

1. Clovelly

It’s definitely no secret that Clovelly Beach has it all for kids and families. There’s a 25m saltwater pool, promenades on both sides, calm waters at the breakwater perfect for toddlers to splash in near the children’s playground Bundock Park Playground, BBQ’s and picnic shelters, plenty of sand, and a great kiosk! It ticks pretty much every box. Clovelly is also a famously great spot for snorkelling, home to gropers and marine life of many kinds, so bring your goggles!

2. Parsley Bay Reserve

This one’s pretty tucked away in Vaucluse, a bit of a semi-kept secret. It’s a fantastically scenic spot for a family picnic, has calm, still waters, natural bushland surrounds, a waterfall and bridge over the bay (where you can spot a water dragon or two), and a partly-shaded playground perfect for under 5s complete with swings, forts, tunnels and see-saws. If you visit during a weekday or before 3pm, you’ll likely find this place pretty quiet!

3. Bondi Beach

This iconic beach is a favourite for families (& LOTS of them) for good reason! Although this summer it’s bound to be packed and traffic and parking is likely to be a bit of a nightmare, it really does have it all. There’s a plethora of awesome eateries on the beaches’ doorstep, a fully fenced playground, a skate park for action lovers, the perfect tanning area at the Grassy Knoll, a pool where kids can always be found having a splash decorated with beautiful aquatic murals, and pretty calm waters at the North end.

4. Bronte Beach

Although the surf can get pretty rocky, kids will just love the calm waters of the famous Bogey Hole , a large natural rock pool, a huge sweep of shady green grass with BBQ’s and picnic shelters, a big kiosk near the lifesaving club, some bike tracks, and a playground! The whole family can really spend an entire day at Bronte Beach without running out of stuff to see and do.

5. Malabar Beach

Definitely lesser known in the Eastern Suburbs, but another great one to go to with young children. There’s a big green park for some running around, a gated play area, BBQ and picnic facilities, and the sandy shoreline is a great place to pick up some green, amber and blue glass pieces smoothed by the water. The long headlands on each side of the beach protect it from rips and surf, a must-have feature of any kid friendly beach.

Gibsons beach at Watson's bay is family friendly. Calm flat waters, lots of grass and shade. Can find a park close by
