Six Of The Best Swimming Locations In Sydney For Families

Summer is here and there is nothing better than a cool dip on a hot summer’s day. Sydney is full of places to worship the water but if you are looking for calm waters, sandy play spaces and family friendly vistas, then this is the list for you.

1. Brighton-Le-Sands

The beach front at Brighton, from Kyeemagh to Dolls Point is one long beach. There are ample car parks and cafes but these fill up quickly on the weekend. The water is calm and clear with several enclosed swimming areas.  The distance from car beach is short for little legs and pack horse parents. Bonus points for the walk/cycle way that leads along the water front – perfect for an afternoon stroll.

2. Oatley Park

A natural bushland peninsula featuring a loop road perfect for riding and running lead down to Oatley Beach.  A very steep hill leads down from the carpark to the water. At high tide the sand area disappears under the water, which can be quite murky with sediment after rain. A great place for a swim among very natural settings with great exploring to be had. There are also showers and toilets available.

3. Kurnell

Lovely sandy beaches with great boulder filled break-waters to climb can be found at Kurnell.  Small waves, shallow water and ample shells to collect make this beach a fave for families. You can even watch planes take off and land from the airport.

4. Carss Bush Park

This is a great park for a whole bunch of activities. Playground, scooter path, picnic shelters, wide grassy spaces and a lovely beach.  The beach is smallish and contained, meaning the kids can roam with a little more freedom. Great for sand play and shallow water swimming with a outdoor shower and seating areas nearby.

5. Gunnamatta Bay

This is a great all round facility, close to Cronulla train station, with change rooms nearby and swimming nets. Situated in the huge Gunnamatta Park with plenty of space to spread a picnic blanket and a great playground.

6. Clovelly Beach

One of the eastern suburbs best beaches, Clovelly is a sheltered inlet with a deep beach and gentle waves.  Great for learning to snorkel, and exploring the rock pools.
