On a recent weekend away to Shoal Bay we discovered an amazing family activity: Sand Boarding. The Stockton Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands are 10 minutes from Port Stephens and at 32km are the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. They are a truly spectacular site and well worth exploring!

Exciting Activities For All

There are a variety of activities you can do to explore the amazing sand dunes including:

  • 4WD Tours

  • Camels Tours

  • Quad Biking

  •  Sand Boarding

We chose the sand boarding and it was one of those rare activities that is fun for everyone from our 20 month old to parents and even our friends.

We drove down to the large car park where there are a variety of operators running sand boarding tours. We didn’t book but I imagine in the middle of summer it might be a good idea.

Easy To Do And Fun!

I took the kids to say hello to the camels (yes, camels!) while my husband found the best tour operator. We hopped on a big 4WD bus and drove over the sand dunes to a secluded dune which had a large hill that graduated in inclination from a soft hill to become almost vertical!

After a quick lesson on how to sit on the boards we were off! It was easy and incredibly fun riding down the sand dunes on our boards. The kids sat between our legs and the 4 year old and 20 month old had an absolute ball riding down the dunes and playing in the sand. We got a bit of a work out climbing back up the top of the sand dunes to ride down again (especially when carrying Mr 20 month old!) but it was totally worth it for the glees and giggles from everyone!

What You Need To Know

You can stay as long as you like on the dunes. We were there for about an hour before the rain set in and we came back. I would recommend taking a jacket as it can be very windy in the dunes. I would also recommend a change of clothes in the car as we were covered head to toe in sand! A truly fantastic and unusual activity that we have not stopped talking about.

I’m Sarah. A Mum of two over-active boys and a self-confessed Sydney tragic. I love living in, exploring, discovering and experiencing all Sydney has to offer. Having lived in Sydney most of my life I have loved exploring it as a grown up but now as a Mum I’m relishing re-discovering my passion for Sydney through the eyes of my boys. I love planning and executing our regular family outings to explore new things in Sydney. As a working Mum, it is a great way for our family to stay connected and have fun together. I would love to spend all my time travelling the world but given I live in the real world of mortgages and jobs we see exploring Sydney as tourists as the next best thing.
