Best Kids’ Music Schools in Melbourne

by Claire Halliday, ellaslist
Think you’ve bred a budding Beethoven? In the minds of some parents, coaxing little ones into music tuition from a very young age is the done thing. For others, weekly music classes are just a bit of fun – and a nice way for young minds to pass some creative time.
Luckily, Melburnians have lots of music schools to choose from – here are some of the best.
Music Works Magic
Music education is a genuine passion for the folk behind this magical, musical school – where music education is valued as a foundation for a lifetime of learning.
It all begins with classes that are enjoyed by parents/carers and the littlies. At this age, it’s about pitch, rhythm, beats and different genres – and the fun that can be found in singing and dancing along.
And as your child grows, you get the thrill of helping them start a real love affair with music, with lessons in singing, or specific instruments, such as piano, keyboard, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, recorder, flute, clarinet – and many more.

Richmond Music Academy
This place has inner-city cool written all over it.
The lessons on offer are for vocal, drums, guitar and piano and the one-on-one tuition is from teachers who are local, working musos, with a real love of music.
Classes are available 7 days a week and they cover a diverse range of musical genres – from rock, folk and pop, to jazz, blues and classical – and deliver their teaching in a supportive way that gets results, without making music feel like a chore. And if your child is more interested in the way the wonder of music makes it from the instrument to the finished composition, the art of music production is also a subject on offer here.

Kathryn’s Music Studio
This Mount Waverley music studio is the home of Suzuki method teachings that focus on piano and flute. Kathryn Bond was introduced to the much-debated Suzuki method of music tuition as a 6-year old. Her credentials are impressive, with connections to some of Melbourne’s best schools. The way a teacher approaches the guidance of music lessons can be such an individual thing but If flute or piano are the instruments of choice for your child, and you are handy to the location, it does look like it would be worth checking out.

Mini Maestros
In the beginning, there’s simply rhythm. This is early childhood music education aimed at babies – pre-schoolers.
The format is weekly classes, and with several dozen locations to choose from across Melbourne, there really is one near you! It’s easy to see why this kids-focused music class has become the empire it is. Parents or carers join in the fun with their little ones and it’s an all-singing, all-bopping session of clapping, stomping, and la-la-la-ing along.

The Rhythm Tree
This is a family-friendly music class aimed at babies and toddlers and pre-school kids who want to experience their taste for all things tuneful in an environment that is nurturing and inclusive – without the pressure of performance-oriented outcomes.
So far, there are classes in a handful of locations, including Doncaster, Port Melbourne, Newport, Abbotsford Convent and East Brunswick. The weekly classes are a term-long commitment that works through a structured program (although the feeling is very much unstructured freedom to express yourself). Depending on your location, there are classes offered 6 days a week, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
