The South is peppered with some gorgeous, long stretches of sand and surf beaches to dip into during the Summer season. However, some are more kid friendly than others, so here is our list of south Sydney’s best family beaches.
1. Bundeena Beaches
You’ll find some great beaches in Bundeena including Horderns, Gunyah and Bonnie Vale just over an hour from the Sydney CBD – so if you’re not a local, don’t be turned off! You can get there via ferry from Cronulla, and trust us, the gorgeous Royal National Park back-drop is worth the adventure! It’s found in a cosy little seaside village with cafe lined streets and a playground. For little ones- we recommend heading south of the ferry wharf for a splash in the still waters of Bundeena Creek.
2. Silver Beach
A gorgeous stretch of water on the Kurnell peninsula fronting Botany Bay. This one’s a bit of a secret, and family friendly elements include the calm waters, the baths of which are netted in Summer, it’s swarming with fish for a snorkelling adventure and it’s dog friendly, so ALL family members can come along! The simple kiosk gets beach food snacks really right with delicious burgers, and you might even spot a kitesurfer zipping past in Botany Bay.

3. Shelly Beach
Cronulla’s Shelly Park and Beach is a short walk from the much busier Cronulla beach, so come here with your kids if you want to avoid the crowds. There is a large, shady reserve out the back of the beach with an awesome, big fenced playground that includes a liberty swing, meaning your BBQ and family picnic day is completely sorted. At the south end, there’s an ocean pool perfect for toddlers, plenty of space and ramps for prams, and a cafe and restaurant close by. Ticks all the boxes!
4. Oak Park Beach
Small and sweet, with probably even less the crowds of Shelly Beach. Families love the sparkling blue, clean water at Oak Beach and Park in Cronulla. It has a rocky shoreline and ocean baths, grassy area and a small playground with a swing set. It’s also a great spot for beginner divers and snorkelers- you’re bound to come face-to-flipper with a few different marine species.

5. Cronulla Beach
One of the most popular beaches in South Sydney. Although waves can get quite big and probably not ideal for toddlers, it has still earned a place on our list. It is near parklands, cafes, and you’re bound to spy a score of surfers doing their thing. The ocean rock pool sits adjacent to the ocean so it’s still possible to have a more relaxing swim.
