For some of us, tanning and wading in gentle rock pools just doesn’t cut it. Here are some action beaches for adventurous kids and families who want to get some adrenaline pumping action out of a day at the beach.

1. Catch A Wave

Hang ten with surfing lessons! Let’s Go Surfing have great surf schools at Bondi Beach, the only officially licensed surf school at this iconic attraction, and also at Maroubra Beach where there’s a long stretch of reliable beach breaks and fewer crowds! We also like Manly Surf School, they offer kids lessons and after-school classes no matter the child’s ability or age.

2. Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

In terms of water sports- there’s nothing quite as on-trend as stand up paddle boarding. Head to Rose Bay for some gorgeous views- no lessons needed, just hire a board for about $25 and head off! If you’re an adventurous family of up to 4, you can hire an extra wide board to venture off together. WATS SUP at Watson’s Bay is also a great place to get your core working, bringing this exciting Hawaii-originating water sport to the Watson’s Bay harbour. Get down there on Australia Day for their annual event- Every Man and His Dog where your furry friend can even join you on your board!

3. Explore In A Kayak

Explore new waterways and inlets in your very own kayak! Sydney Kayak offers kayak hire in many places. Check out the Opera House as you kayak around Sydney Harbour, discover secluded bays and rivers in Port Hacking, kayak at the Royal National Park, the protected bay at Balmoral, the man-made whitewater course in Penrith, at picturesque Pittwater, on the tranquil Narrabeen Lagoon or even the Hawkesbury River!

4. Meet Marine Life

If you have your own snorkel sets at home, then Clovelly Beach, Gordon’s Bay and Manly’s Cabbage Tree Bay are must-visit spots. They have calm, gentle waters, but the exciting array of marine life still gives you the sense of adventure some families want in a day at the beach. 5. Get Swept Away

This one’s a little more expensive and generally for children 12 yrs and over, but why not consider kite-surfing as your next water sports adventure?? Have your wetsuit and booties ready for lessons at Monterey and Botany Bay, where instructors will take you out on a jet boat.

6. Pedal To The Metal

Renting a family pedal boat is a fun yet gentle and relaxing way to make the most out of a beach day.
You cant rent a pedal boat from Prokayaks at Narrabeen Lakes, or from the Lane Cove Boatshed at the Lane Cove National Park. Parramatta City Council now has an awesome non-motorised boat rental program than includes pedal boats- head to Lake Parramatta on weekends, public holidays and school holidays to make use of this great offer that encourages families to explore this overlooked gem.
