Exciting news for Inner City residents last week with the announcement from the City of Sydney on construction of a new Aquatic Centre in Green Square.

The construction of the Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre on Joynton Avenue in Zetland, will start this month with the aim to have the first stage complete by early 2020. The City of Sydney have indicated that the new aquatic centre will be the largest built since the Olympics over 20 years ago. And we’ve got to say, this sounds and looks really exciting for families.

The design of the pool has been inspired by Sydney’s best loved and famous beaches. It looks beautifully intriguing. A 50-metre heated outdoor pool INSIDE the larger ocean pool (see image).

The complex will also house a 25m program pool specifically for swimming lessons, indoor heated water play space and hydrotherapy pools.

Families will also love the crèche with indoor play area available whilst parents swim or work out at the fitness centre or play in their community sport team on the new multipurpose synthetic sports fields.

Amazing.

This place really feels like it has so much to offer the growing community of Green Square and its surrounds.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has indicated that the area is one of focus for the council, spending $540 million over the next 10 years on extensive infrastructure and streetscaping works throughout the area, as well as new community facilities that also include a library and plaza, creative centre, childcare centre and more than 15 parks and open spaces. Green Square development area includes the suburbs of Beaconsfield and Zetland and parts of Rosebery, Alexandria and Waterloo.

Green Square is one of the fastest growing precincts in Australia, and we’re doing everything we can to make sure it is a wonderful urban neighbourhood with the services and facilities its residents and workers need,” the Lord Mayor said. “The Gunyama Park complex will be a terrific place for locals and visitors alike to exercise, relax and catch up with friends and family. The pool will have something for everyone, from serious swimmers looking to improve their lap times, to families wanting a safe place for their children to learn to swim or play".

Green Square area is currently also home to the Wulaba park playground in Waterloo, the Danks Street produce markets and the stunning Waranara Early Education centre built on the site of the historic South Sydney Hospital Site.
