Golden, crispy, crunchy... it's hard to hate the fast food of our childhood, munched happily on the shoreline, doused with vinegar tomato sauce, or snuck out of a hole you made in the paper wrapping on the walk home from the shop - fish and chips are hard to beat!

But we don't want limp fish and soggy chips, so we've rounded up six of the hottest places in Melbourne to get the old school takeaway of our dreams.

1. Hooked, various locations around Melbourne

Famous for their lunchboxes and Double Chipper Box, Hooked have knocked such a simple dish completely out of the park. 

Catch them between 11.30am and 4.30pm for their amazing $10 lunch specials, and make sure you order the superfood salad to see for yourself what Melbourne is raving about.

2. Cerberus Beach House, Half Moon Bay

Your quintissential kiosk fish and chips with an iconic view - one of the best spots in this city to grab a hot, crispy, battered, salty parcel of goodness from the sea.

The fish is always fresh, never frozen, and cooked in oil cleaned daily which makes a huge difference to the flavour. The batter is light and airy and everything tastes exactly as it should.

Of course you can also pop upstairs for dinner for incredible views, but do book, they get very busy!

3. Paper Fish, St Kilda

If you're into sustainably-caught fish served in environmentally-aware surroundings, head to Paper Fish for your fish & chip fix. Everything from the produce itself to the items they're wrapped in has been chosen with thought for the Earth and the impact they will produce.

Tucked into the refurbished Stokehouse and featuring the artwork of amazing local designer Beci Orpin, Paper Fish on the St Kilda foreshore is absolutely not to be missed. The menu includes such bangers as coconut-prawn tacos, fritto misto (mixed fried fish) in a cone, and excitingly, Japanese-spiced kingfish wings that normally just get thrown away (or turn into a chef's treat!). 

Paper Fish is inspired by the quintessential Australian summer spent on the beach and promises "a fresher, healthier alternative to traditional fish and chips". Yum!

4. Tommy Ruff, Various Locations

Everybody loves the newspaper-print fish & chip wrapping at Tommy Ruff, harking back to earlier times when real newspaper was used to wrap up your takeaway. 

But even better than that is the menu that boasts fish cevice, Spanish fish skewers, Middle Eastern coleslaw, salmon burgers and even a brown rice option in addition to all the (super-well-done) traditional favourites.

5. Tank Fish & Chippery

FISH TACO! And what a fantastic fish taco it is, too. 

But it's not all taco all the time at Tank, they also have prawn salad, veggie burgers and old school fish and chips, where you can choose from barramundi, flake, Atlantic salmon, and flathead.

Sooooo there's actually a gangplank that you can sit on (not walk, thankfully!) to gobble up your grub! If that doesn't suit, you've got plenty of other options - a picnic rug on the lawn, upstairs on the bridge deck, down on the sand, or heck why not right on your own couch with a bottle of wine?

Your Geelong Boat House feast could include some of the greatest lemon pepper squid your mouth has ever known, spring rolls, fishermans baskets, grilled seafood salad and crispy, salty chips.
