A few years ago the Grounds of Alexandria opened its doors amidst a sea of industrial complexes and factory outlets. Hip urban families flocked to this child-friendly oasis and an urban renewal has blossomed in Alexandria, with kids proving to be the real winners. In the past few years, an abundance of kids activities have sprung up, making this one of the go-to destinations for Sydney families looking for fun. Here are six of the best kids’ activities in Alexandria.

1. Little Dynamos

With an indoor playground five levels high, Little Dynamos can wear your kids out like nothing else. Relax with a coffee and watch your kids climb, crawl, slide and generally burst with excitement. There is a foam ball room, complete with air cannons and a separate area for smaller kids to play without fear of being bowled over in all the excitement. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch, with healthy options and kids meals available.

Age: 6 months to 12 years
Cost: 1-3 years: $14
4-12 year olds: $16
Under 1: $5 or free with older sibling
Adults: free.
Fun fact: The longest slide here is a whopping six meters high, spiralling down from the fifth level of the play structure.

2. Sky Zone

When I was a kid, there was nothing better than jumping on a trampoline, but now there is: jumping on hundreds of trampolines! If you’ve been looking to relive those heady days of bouncy excitement, taking your kids to Sky Zone is just the excuse you need. Little Leapers sessions run weekdays for children from walking to five years old, ideal for little ones that might get a bit overwhelmed by the big kids flying at them.

Age: 3 to adult, or up to 5 for Little Leapers sessions
Cost: $18 including socks, or $10 for Little Leapers
Fun fact: A NASA study found trampolining is more effective for increasing fitness than running, so it’s not just a fun activity for kids.

3. AttracTivity

This is high-intensity excitement with activities for young and old. Even the bowling at AttracTivity has been revved-up and is a fast paced version suited to even the shortest attention span. Younger kids can also enjoy Lazer Frenzy, a game which involves getting through a room of lasers without breaking the beams, and the XD Theatre, an interactive motion ride. Older kids will also love the Dodgem cars, Scarefactory Maze, Craven’s Crypt Shooting Gallery and ropes climbing course. These kids’ activities are not for the faint-hearted.

Age: 3 to adult
Cost: Entry is free. Packages range from $15 for kids under 6 up to $50 for three hours of unlimited play
Fun fact: Dodgem cars were popular as far back as the 1920s.

4. Paint and Play

Paint and Play holds a two-hour session each Monday and Thursday from 10am – 12pm which begins with free play, giving kids the chance to explore the baby or toddler area, home corner, soft play, outdoor area or get stuck into arts or crafts. Best of all, they’re encouraged to make all sorts of messes that you don’t have to clean up afterwards! The second half is teacher-led and features singing, dancing, music, stories and games. Run by a mother of two and an experienced Early Childhood Educator, this is two hours that is seriously good for development, of course they’ll be having too much fun to notice. There is no need to book ahead, just turn up on the day.

Age: 0 to 5 years
Cost: $14 or $22 for two siblings
Fun fact: Pre-schoolers learn empathy as well as how to regulate their own emotions through both free play and adult-guided play.

5. Sydney Park

Though officially in St. Peters, Sydney Park borders Alexandria so it just slips in on this list. When the sun is shining and you’d feel guilty staying indoors, this huge park is a haven for families. A highlight for kids is the big bike path complete with road signs (it’s never too early to learn the road rules) and one of Sydney’s best playgrounds built to stimulate touch, hearing and sight.

Age: All ages
Cost: Free
Fun fact: A city farm is due to open soon, giving kids the chance to see firsthand that peas don’t actually come from the supermarket freezer.
